Sensei Chris Maclean 3rd Dan

Telford Dojo

Chris is originally from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, his first training in Martial Arts was as a teenager when he took up Judo at a local club as an afternoon's sports option from college. He caught the bug and continued to train in it going along to the club in the evenings. Even though he was a tall skinny youth, not the ideal build for Judo, he competed at club level at competitions and graded up to his 3rd Kyu Green belt.

Martial arts training then stopped when at 19, Chris joined the Army and started his career in the Royal Military Police. He saw active service in the First Gulf War and in Northern Ireland. During his 13-year career Chris also served in Germany, The Netherlands, mainland UK & Sierra Leone.

On leaving the Army in 2001 Chris joined West Mercia Police and is still a serving front line Response officer.

Over the years Chris has trained in several different styles of Martial Arts which included Muay Thai, MMA, Kapap and Karate.

He dedicated himself to Wado Ryu Karate, training under Sensei Steve Lowe, Zanshin Do Karate, Telford. He competed at the annual EKO National Championships winning a couple of medals for Kumite. Attaining Shodan (1st Dan) in Nov 2008 and then Nidan (2nd Dan) in Nov 2011.

As Chris became more involved with the teaching side of Wado Ryu he had a strong interest in Bunkai, extracting the fighting techniques from the katas and their real-world applications, linking this with the origins of Wado Ryu coming from Jujutsu, there was only one natural progression to further his training. The opportunity arose to train under Hanshi Terry Hall at Shinpi Izumi Dojo, then at the Horsehay Village Hall.

Chris attained Shodan Ho in Jul 2013. But unfortunately, due to work commitments had to stop training for a while.

He returned to training again in 2018 and since then graded to Nidan (2nd Dan) in Mar 2019 and went on to take charge of the Telford Dojo, now at the 1st Wrekin Scout Hall, Hadley, with the able assistance of Sensei’s Matthew Thursfield and Arek Blok.
